Disconnecting from work can feel like a challenge. Yet, taking proper holidays is essential for well-being, creativity, and long-term productivity. Insights from internal conversations with Magnolians reveal how they recharge, and they share what helps them return to work with renewed balance.

One popular approach is long-distance cycling. As one Magnolian shared, “When I’m on the bike, I’m completely in my own universe. By the end of the day, I feel fully relaxed. Off the bike, it may take a few days to achieve the same state of calm.” This example shows how engaging in immersive activities allows teammates to switch off mentally.

Asking another colleague, he also swears on active holidays: “I don’t need to switch off from work, because I genuinely enjoy it. But when my vacation balance grows too high, you’ll probably find me hiking across the stunning trails of Madeira, the Azores, or the Canary Islands—or eating my way through (Eat)-aly!”

Many Magnolians highlighted the importance of disconnecting from digital communications. While some stay lightly connected to email or Slack during short breaks, most find it easier to return to work without an overwhelming backlog. One teammate explained, “Because my holidays are usually short, staying somewhat connected helps me avoid 99+ emails waiting when I return.”

The Real Key to Switching Off Completely Lies in Preparation.

Before taking time off, they set aside time to wrap up tasks, review accesses, and appoint a deputy. They’re transparent about anything left unfinished, ensuring colleagues aren’t caught by surprise. This way, they can log off guilt-free, while the team is well prepared in their absence.”

Our wellbeing ambassador team emphasizes that true recovery comes from creating mental and physical space to recharge. Simple strategies, like leaving devices behind during meals, taking short walks without checking messages, or enjoying quiet moments at home, can significantly enhance well-being.

Far from weakening teams - by adding an extra workload, taking over from a teammate - holidays actually strengthen them. A spirit of trust and reasonable coverage keeps everything flowing.

Magnolians report feeling more balanced and less stressed, which positively affects performance in the longer term. After a holiday, they return feeling noticeably more productive. Meetings are led with greater energy, tasks are handled with ease, and a sense of calm allows creativity to flow and decisions to come faster.

Steps to Unplug and Restore

For colleagues struggling to switch off, here are a few recommended practical steps:

Go offline when possible, even briefly- turn off notifications or hang your “Do not disturb” sign.

Take intentional breaks—walks, quiet coffee, or short exercise sessions.

Embrace slow moments—rest doesn’t require epic adventures.

Inject lightheartedness—pets, jokes, or simple pleasures can be surprisingly restorative.

Holidays are more than just time away from the desk—they are a strategic investment in the well-being of Magnolians. By encouraging colleagues to disconnect, engage in meaningful activities, and slow down, Magnolia supports both personal balance and long-term productivity.
